"Will at once open a new and imaginative world and feel like a book you have loved forever." — Jennifer Nielsen, New York Times bestselling author of The False Prince

A special middle grade debut of magic and courage in a world of witches, written with the charm and enchantment of Circus Mirandus and The Apothecary.Arianwyn has flunked her witch's assessment: She's doomed. Declared an apprentice and sent to the town of Lull in disgrace, she may never become a real witch — much to the glee of her archrival, Gimma. But remote Lull is not as boring as it seems. Strange things are sighted in the woods, a dangerous infestation of hex creeps throughout the town, and a mysterious magical visitor arrives with his eye on her. With every spirit banished, creature helped, and spell cast, Arianwyn starts to get the hang of being a witch — even if she's only an apprentice. But the worst still lies ahead. For a sinister darkness has begun to haunt her spells, and there may be much more at stake than just her pride... for Arianwyn and the entire land.

In Nicol’s charming debut novel, failed witch Arianwyn Gribble learns of the power that comes with knowing one’s self-worth and conquering the darkness within. After Arianwyn botches her evaluation, she thinks her dreams of becoming a full-fledged witch and member of the Civil Witchcraft Authority are over, but she’s given a second chance: she will continue to be an apprentice witch in the small town of Lull until the time of her reevaluation. After arriving in Lull, Arianwyn realizes more is afoot: evil spirits from the Great Wood (a “dangerous and remote” forest filled with ancient spirits) are causing mayhem, a hex infection has taken root in the Great Wood, and a shadowy creature begins terrorizing the town, too. Nicol presents a world filled with magic and strange creatures, but unexplored plotlines—such as the ongoing but vaguely described war that has caused a shortage of witches, allowing Arianwyn the opportunity to be reevaluated—and underdeveloped characters don’t let the book to live up to its full potential. Still, Nicol lays enough groundwork to support future stories. Ages 8–12.

This enchanting tale comes to life through the charming narration of Elizabeth Knowelden, who captures the voice of each character, human or magical. Arianwyn is disgraced after she has failed her witchcraft test. Her grandmother, a master witch, uses her influence to ensure that Arianwyn can continue her education as an apprentice in Lull, a remote village on the edge of the Great Woods, which are filled with bewitching creatures. When a malevolent force threatens the town, will Arianwyn have the courage and skill to confront the dark beast? Knowelden's narration is perfect for this action-packed gem of a story as she swiftly segues among the many characters. Especially delightful are her depictions of the magical beings. In chapters that alternate between sections from The Apprentice Witch’s Handbook and the events following young Arianwyn’s failed evaluation by the Civil Witchcraft Authority, author Nicol spins a tale of magic and fantastic beasts. After her grandmother, an elder in the CWA, intervenes, Arianwyn, unsure of her abilities, is posted as an apprentice witch to the town of Lull. But when dark forces and powerful creatures begin to emerge from the Great Wood, the once-sleepy town becomes a testing ground for her skill. Experienced voice actress Knowelden’s British accent is pitch-perfect for this fantasy novel, and she carefully conveys the personalities of Arianwyn’s concerned grandmother, her arrogant rival Gimma, kind and supportive friends Salle and Colin, and the pompous Mayor Belcher with distinctive voices. The plot will undoubtedly sound familiar to fans of British fantasy. Still, author Nicol adds enough magic to create an imaginative world that will have young listeners looking forward to the sequel. Narrator Knowelden’s fine performance makes this a worthwhile listening experience. Ages 8–12. A Chicken House hardcover.
