The Battle Lines Have Been Drawn. The War Has Begun.
The riveting new James Hicks thriller by award-winning author Terrence McCauley

James Hicks has spent his entire life and career fighting on the front lines of terrorism for the clandestine intelligence organization known as The University. Hicks has learned that enemies can appear and disappear in the blink of an eye, and allegiances shift like the wind. But now, Hicks has finally discovered his true enemy: the criminal organization known as The Vanguard.
This shadowy group has operated as a deadly organization comprised weapons dealers, drug runners, and money launderers for decades, but has now decided to add regime change to their catastrophic agenda. But knowing the enemy is one thing. Being able to defeat it is another matter entirely. When Hicks uncovers a solid lead on his new adversaries, his world explodes. His home base is attacked, his operatives in the field are wiped out, and, for the first time, The University finds itself in open combat against an unknown enemy. In a battle that rages from the streets of Manhattan to the halls of power in Washington, D.C., to the dark alleys of Berlin, Hicks will have to use every resource at his disposal to defeat A Conspiracy of Ravens.

The University, a clandestine organization that has been fighting the forces of evil since WWII, squares off against the Vanguard, the world’s biggest criminal network, in McCauley’s run-of-the-mill third James Hicks thriller (after 2016’s A Murder of Crows). Hicks, who heads the University, has wanted to take on the Vanguard for years, but has never been able to get a line on the weapons-dealing group. When Hicks’s New York City headquarters is destroyed by a Vanguard-guided drone, bits of evidence in the debris give him enough clues to track down its leaders. One by one, operatives on both sides are picked off until the battle comes to a climax on the streets of Berlin. Those who like nonstop action and lots of muscular, snarly talk will have fun, but the brisk pacing leaves no room for characterization, subplots, or backstory. New readers will have to settle for a cursory description of what the University is, and they’ll have little idea why the Vanguard is so evil. Agent: Doug Grad, Doug Grad Literary.

McCauley's first two James Hicks spy thrillers, A Murder of Crows (2016) and Sympathy for the Devil (2015), offered affectionate jabs at John le Carre and his cozy names for George Smiley's world. Smiley's crew toils in the Circus, while Hicks and his colleagues attend University. Hicks has come up in the world: his enemies send a Hellfire missile to devastate a city block just because he is there. After surviving the blast, Hicks must identify and locate whoever wants him dead. It turns out to be a shadowy organization called the Vanguard. Once content to be criminals, their leaders now seek to topple governments, and they see Hicks as their primary obstacle. Standard thriller stuff, made worthy by some stunning set pieces. Like Hicks' inventive ways to flummox the hit teams who track him. Or scene-stealing Roger Cobb, who excels in extracting information. Sadistic? No, businesslike, as when he tells a captive, Tell me the truth, and you'll die with dignity. If you lie to me, I'll bake you. Solid fare for no-nonsense spy fans.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)

A clandestine spy team refuses to buckle under to the CIA, causing its members to find themselves under siege from all sides. When an overeager sheriff's deputy interrupts the surveillance of a suspicious BMW by James Hicks, dean of the University, a top-secret group of international operatives, Hicks is forced to eliminate the two "probably Russian" occupants of the BMW in rescuing the dazed deputy. Unfortunately, his action leads to a meeting with Charles Demerest, head of Clandestine Services at the CIA. A collegial meeting quickly escalates into a showdown; Hicks is on the trail of a deadly terrorist group known as the Vanguard, and Demerest demands that he share all his evidence. Hicks' resistance pushes Demerest to a bold decision: to take Hicks down. Holed up in his 23rd Street facility in Manhattan, Hicks realizes he must now be on the Vanguard's radar as well. After checking in with the University's chief interrogator, Roger Cobb, in Berlin, Hicks reaches out for intel to Mossad contact Ronen Tayeb in Moscow. After an initial conversation with Tayeb, Hicks' calls suspiciously go straight to voicemail. Shortly after, the Manhattan office is blown up. Only a warning by Jason, the sidekick and second-in-command who remotely monitors terrorist movements around the globe, enables Hicks to escape with seconds to spare. Amazingly, a very similar attack occurs in Moscow the same day. After ensuring that his operatives worldwide are unhurt, Hicks and the University must determine exactly whom they're fighting: the CIA? The Vanguard? Demerest? Someone else? McCauley's third account of the University (A Murder of Crows, 2016, etc.) boasts tech savvy, international settings, nail-biting action, and an arsenal of twists.
