Red-heel sock monkeys are a classic craft with enduring popularity. Lindner, known as the Sock Monkey Lady, is popular not only for the sock monkeys that she sews and styles but for her sock monkey photography, which has been featured on a variety of items. In the author's first how-to book, she introduces the history and design of these collectible softies. The organization of the book, however, is odd. The first few chapters provide introductory information about red-heel sock monkeys and the basic supplies involved followed by photos of a number of Lindner's whimsical creations--logical enough. But instead of supplying a basic sock monkey pattern followed by variations, the variations are presented first, which will make crafters wonder how they're supposed to create the sock monkey that they're going to decorate with a moustache and a tattoo. A thorough basic pattern is finally given, yet it's three-quarters of the way through the book. Though some details are added before the sock monkey is sewn and stuffed, most are not, meaning that crafters will need to flip back to the previous section for further information. VERDICT Despite the unusual arrangement, the instructions are complete and the ideas are abundant. Sock monkey aficionados will appreciate Lindner's anecdotes and photographs.
